2 x 1

Despite competition from a couple of big new releases, Adele continues her phenomenal success with ‘21’ holding on at the top of the Album Chart for a 7th consecutive week. It is three years since any other artist achieved the same feat - Coldplay with ‘Viva La Vida’ in 2008, it’s over ten years since an artist signed to an independent label spent this long at No1 – Moby with ‘Play’ in 2000, and it’s fifteen years since a female artist spent this many consecutive weeks at the top – Alanis Morissette’s ‘Jagged Little Pill’ in 1996.

Elbow achieve their highest Irish chart position in their ten-year recording career as their fifth studio release ‘Build A Rocket Boys!’ debuts at No2.  Their previous best was 2008’s Mercury Music Prize winner ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ which peaked at No9.  R.E.M. complete the Top 3 with their fifteenth studio album ‘Collapse Into Now’ - their previous eight albums all debuted at No1 or No2 between 1991 and 2008.  Bruno Mars climbs two places from No6 to No4 with ‘Doo-Wops & Hooligans’ while Rihanna’s ‘Loud’ drops four places from No2 to No6.  Other notable new entries this week include Avril Lavigne’s ‘Goodbye Lullaby’ which enters the chart at No12 - no match for her previous three albums which all made the No1 spot - and Noah & The Whale’s third album ‘Last Night On Earth’ which enters the Chart at No17.  There’s also a re-entry for The Commitments soundtrack at No13, on the 20th anniversary of the film’s release in 1991.

Not content with reigning over the Album Chart, Adele also maintains her grip on the Singles Chart with ‘Someone Like You’ taking a second week at No1 and in the process leads a Top 5 unchanged from last week: Jessie J holds at No2, Jedward stand firm at No3 and Rihanna & Adele are non-movers at No4 & No5.  Britney Spears has this week’s highest new entry at No7 with ‘Till The World Ends’ – the second track to be taken from her forthcoming ‘Femme Fatale’ album, due for release later this month.  Twelve years after her first hit ‘If You Had My Love’ reached No8 in the Irish Chart, Jennifer Lopez has this week’s next new entry at No12 with ‘On The Floor’ (feat. Pitbull), her sixteenth appearance on this chart and first in four years.
