X Factor 2010 finalists One Direction unleash their debut single ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ and land at No1 on the Singles Chart this week, deposing Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera who slip to No2 after a four-week reign at the summit with ‘Moves Like Jagger’.
With Christina Perri and Calvin Harris at No3 and No4 respectively, David Guetta jumps seven places to No5 with ‘Titanium’ (feat. Sia) to claim his ninth Irish Top 5 single in just two years. Coldplay have the next new entry at No14 with ‘Paradise’, the follow-up to ‘Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall’ which reached No9 three months back, and the second single from their fifth studio album ‘Mylo Xyloto’, scheduled for release in October. It’s another good week for Rihanna, who makes two new appearances in the Top 20 this week: up from No23 to No15 as featured artist on Nicki Minaj’s ‘Fly’ and up from No30 to No17 with her own ‘Cheers (Drink To That)’.
Adele takes a 26th week at the top of the Album Chart with ‘21’, denying Ed Sheeran a No1 debut for his first album ‘+’ which settles at No2 on the back of two recent Top 20 singles (‘The A Team’ and ‘You Need Me, I Don’t Need You’). Imelda May jumps from No12 to No6 with the release of ‘More Mayhem’ – her ‘Mayhem’ album reissued with six extra tracks – but slides from No7 to No10 with ‘Love Tattoo’. Laura Marling has this week’s next new entry at No8 with her third album ‘A Creature I Don’t Know’. Her first release ‘Alas I Cannot Swim’ has yet to chart in Ireland, but the follow-up ‘I Speak Because I Can’ debuted and peaked at No13 last year.
