EA knocks itself off No1 with The Sims 2

18/Sep/2004

EA knocks itself off the top of the Top 40 Entertainment Software (All Formats) Chart with the sequel to the highest selling PC game of all time ‘The Sims 2’ pushing ‘Burnout 3: Takedown’ (PS2/XB) down to No2.

‘The Sims 2’ cannot beat Championship Manager 4’s record as the fastest selling PC game, coming second to Eidos’ football management title in the highest grossing PC launch week stakes. However ‘The Sims 2’ makes it into the Top 10 launch week sales on any format, in at No9. ‘Burnout 3: Takedown’ has far from crashed and burnt with an increase in sales of 32% on PS2, making the gap between No1 and No2 closer than might have been expected, especially with No3 title ‘Conflict: Vietnam’ (PS2/XB/PC) falling in sales by 45% across all formats. There are 7 new entries in the Top 40, five are single format exclusives and six are from differing publishers. The second highest new release is Capcom’s ‘Resident Evil: Outbreak’ (PS2) at No4 followed by THQ’s ‘WWE: Day of Reckoning’ (GC) at No10. This week’s other new entries, though all sequels, are of varying genres with Konami’s ‘Silent Hill 4: The Room’ (survival horror) at No11, ‘Madden NFL 2005’ (American football) at No18, Square Enix/Ubisoft’s ‘Final Fantasy XI Online’ (massively multiplayer online RPG) at No25 and Koei’s ‘Dynasty Warriors: Empires’ (beat-em up) at No31.
