Lightning Strikes

18/Oct/2013

Twenty-two years after the release of their debut ‘Ten’, Pearl Jam storm to the top of the Album Chart this week with their tenth studio album ‘Lightning Bolt’. It’s their first Irish No1 since ‘Vitalogy’ in 1994, although every album since then has made the Top10.

Arctic Monkeys take a fourth consecutive week at No2 with ‘AM’, ahead of last week’s No1 ‘Bangerz’ which slips to No3 for Miley Cyrus. John Newman claims the second new entry at No8 with his debut album ‘Tribute’, which features both his solo hit singles ‘Love Me Again’ and ‘Cheating’. The third new entry of the week is at No12 for Paul McCartney with ‘New’, just behind the No9 debut for his covers album ‘Kisses On The Bottom’ last year, but well ahead of his previous album of new material, ‘Memory Almost Full’, which peaked at No30 in 2007. The Saturdays land at No16 with their fifth album ‘Living For The Weekend’ – their only previous Top 30 album was ‘Headlines!’ which reached No10 in 2010. The fifth new entry is at No22 for Cher with ‘Closer To The Truth’, her first new material since 2001’s ‘Living Proof’ which failed to make the Irish Chart. Until this week her most recent appearance on this chart was back in 1999 when her ‘Greatest Hits’ collection reached No7.

It’s all change at the top of the Singles Chart this week as Birdy flies up five places from No6 with ‘Wings’, following her performance on The Late Late Show last Friday. Her only previous hit was ‘Skinny Love’ which reached No22 three weeks ago, more than two years after the song’s original release in 2011. Lorde slips to No2 with ‘Royals’ after a week at the top, followed by Hozier who climb one place to No3 with ‘Take Me To Church’. James Blunt breaks into the Top 20 (up to No13 from No51 last week) with ‘Bonfire Heart’, the lead track from his fourth album ‘Moon Landing’ which is out today (Friday). One place behind, Justin Bieber is new at No14 with ‘All That Matters’ – his ninth appearance in the Irish Top 20, although he’s yet to make the Top 5. The third new entry of the week is at No16 for Eminem with ‘Rap God’, just a week after the release of ‘Survival’ which climbs from No39 to No22. With ‘Berzerk’ at No25, he now has three tracks in the Irish Top 30 – all three from ‘Marshall Mathers LP 2’ which is due for release in November.
