FIFA 2005 scores first on debut ahead of record breaking Fable

09/Oct/2004

EA’s multi-format football phenomenon ‘FIFA 2005’ shoots straight into No1 in the Entertainment Software Top 40 with last week’s No1 ‘Star Wars: Battlefront’ (PS2/XB/PC) feeling the effects of the dark side, sliding to No8 (down 59% across all formats).

‘FIFA 2005’ was released two weeks earlier in the year than its predecessor ‘FIFA 2004’ and despite the PS2 version’s launch week being the 10th biggest of any game, it cannot match ‘FIFA 2004’ (6th fastest selling game ever, based on launch week). Microsoft’s Xbox-exclusive RPG ‘Fable’ debuts at No2, but tops the Xbox chart ahead of ‘FIFA 2005’ to record the biggest Xbox launch week ever. Activision’s ‘Tony Hawk’s Underground 2’ (PS2/XB/GC) is the only other Top 10 new entry, in at No7. Despite a drop in sales of 20% Nintendo’s ‘Pokemon Fire Red’ (GBA) is up from No5 to No3, while ‘Pokemon Leaf Green’ (GBA) moves in the opposite direction, down from No7 to No9. This week’s highest Top 40 climber is Ubisoft’s ‘Rocky Legends’ (PS2/XB), up an impressive 15 places from No28 to No13, while 2 titles released last week enter the Top 40 for the first time: Activision’s multi-format ‘Shark Tale’ (coinciding with the film release) at No22 and Sony’s ‘This is Football 2005’ (PS2) at No29. There are two more new releases debuting in this week’s chart: Vivendi’s ‘Crash Twinsanity’ (PS2/XB) at No25 and Nintendo’s ‘Pikmin 2’ (GC) at No32 (No1 in the Gamecube Chart ahead of ‘FIFA 2005’ which comes in at No2).
