Haunting Melodies

13/Jun/2014

Back in November 2012 Ella Henderson was eliminated from The X Factor to end up in sixth place, but this week her debut single 'Ghost' storms into the Irish Singles Chart at No1.

Sam Smith's 'Stay With Me' dips to No3 after three weeks at the top, one place behind John Legend whose 'All Of Me' takes a fifth consecutive week at No2. For the second week in a row Jason Derulo's 'Wiggle' (featuring Snoop Dogg) is one of the highest climbers - up eleven places to No10 - and it's an eleventh Top 20 single for the Miami singer. Tiesto has the next new entry at No13 with 'Wasted', as featured on the 22 Jump Street soundtrack. Despite three Top 10 solo albums and numerous compilations, this is only his third appearance in the Top 20 Singles chart, following 'Adagio For Strings' (No20 in 2007) and 'Red Lights' (No3 earlier this year). The third and final new entry in this week's Top 30 is at No22 for Aslan with 'I Need A Little Time'. Their debut single 'This Is' reached No12 in June 1986, which means their 23 hits now span an incredible twenty-eight years.

Coldplay's 'Ghost Stories' remains at No1 on the Album Chart for a fourth week since release, despite a challenge from four new entries in this week's Top 10. The leader of this pack is Kasabian who arrive at No2 with their fifth studio album '48:13' - matching the No2 debut for their previous release 'Velociraptor!' in 2011. Jack White arrives two places behind at No4 with his second solo release 'Lazaretto', compared with his No2 debut for 'Blunderbuss' in 2012. Passenger claims the third new entry at No6 with his fifth album and major label debut 'Whispers'. His breakthrough came with the No1 single 'Let Her Go' and his fourth album 'All The Little Lights' which reached No2 last year. The fourth and final new entry in this week's Top 10 is at No10 for Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit with 'Stay Gold', their third album and the first to make the Top 50. Two independently-released Irish rock bands miss out on the Top 10 but make respectable debuts just outside: Hot Sprockets are new at No11 with 'Brother Nature' and Crow Black Chicken debut at No12 with 'Rumble Shake'.
