Six years ago the original ‘Metal Gear Solid’ (PSX) topped the All Formats Chart and three years later ‘Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty’ (PS2) achieved the same feat. Now 3 years later ‘Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater’ (PS2) enters the All Formats Top 40 at No1 pushing Lucasarts’ ‘Mercenaries’ down to No2.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater achieves the 12th largest launch week of any PS2 game in the UK. Although not better than its predecessor, which remains the 5th fastest-selling PS2 game, it does manage to outdo ‘Gran Turismo 3’ (PS2) coming in one place higher in the fastest-selling PS2 game stakes, with Gran Turismo 4 launching next week. Lucasarts now has 3 titles in the All Formats Top 10 as ‘Star Wars: Republic Commando’ (XB/PC) debuts at No3 and ‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2’ (XB/PC) falls from No4 to No9. Lucasarts knocks itself off the top of the Xbox Chart for the 3rd time in consecutive weeks with 3 different games as ‘Republic Commando’ claims No1 ahead of ‘Mercenaries’. Ubisoft has 2 new entries this week with the saucy ‘Playboy: The Mansion’ (PS2/XB/GC) coming in at No12 and the survival horror game ‘Cold Fear’ (XB/PS2) creeping in at No33 with a strong Xbox showing of 61%. EA’s ‘Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath’ (XB) is the only other new release to make it into the All Formats Top 40, making an appearance at No17.
