A Darker Week For Music

Following sad news last Friday regarding the passing of another great, Leonard Cohen's 14th and final studio album 'You Want It Darker' returns to the No1 spot.


Olly Murs' new release '24 Hrs' makes a debut at No2 - his highest week one position to date. His only album to have reached No2 previously was 'In Case You Didn't Know' in the week leading up to Christmas back in 2011. Leonard Cohen takes No3 with 'Greatest Hits', pushing last week's No1, Robbie Williams' 'Heavy Entertainment Show' down to No4. With 'The Essential Leonard Cohen' taking No5, Emeli Sande's latest studio album aptly titled 'Long Live The Angels' makes a debut at No6. With a total of 9 albums in the Top100 this week, Leonard Cohen appears 6 times in the Top40 - 'Live in Dublin' and 'Popular Problems' taking Nos 17 and 20 respectively. Other notable new entries this week include Sting's 12th studio album '57th & 9th' enters at No22, closely followed by A Tribe Called Quest's first album in almost 20 years, 'We Got It From Here... Thank You 4 Your Service' enters this week at No24. Further down, we see a new Bowie compilation 'Legacy' join at No27, 'Songs of Leonard Cohen' (his first studio album back in 1967) at No40 and Cohen's 8th studio release 'I'm Your Man' at No43.กก

In the Singles Chart, last week's No1, James Arthur's 'Say You Won't Let Go' drops to No2 to make way for a new No1 - 'Rockabye' from Clean Bandit feat. Sean Paul and Anne-Marie. Chainsmokers feat. Halsey remain at No3 with 'Closer' whilst last week's No2, Little Mix's 'Shout Out To My Ex' drops to No4. Slowly climbing up the charts at No5 is The Weeknd feat Daft Punk with 'Starboy. With no new entries into the Top50, 'On Hold' by The XX takes No51 and Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' rejoins the Top100 at No55 - his most famous composition, having been covered by over 100 artists to date.
