Lucasarts forces GTA to take 2nd place

07/Nov/2005

The force is strong this week: after last week’s broken street date Lucasarts’ ‘Star Wars: Battlefront II’ (PS2/XB/PSP/PC) is elevated from No6 to No1 All Formats Jedi Master with the PS2 version achieving the second best sales week of any Star Wars game - behind ‘Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith’ PS2 and selling almost 3 times as much at launch than its predecessor.

Take 2/Rockstar’s first outing of GTA on PSP ‘Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories’ debuts at No2, ahead of Konami’s ‘Pro Evolution Soccer 5’ (down from No1 to No3) and EA’s ‘FIFA 06’ (down from No2 to No4). ‘Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories’ is now the fastest selling PSP game, outselling even the first week sales of its elder PS2 brother ‘Grand Theft Auto 3’. Activision’s ‘Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland’ (PS2/XB/GC) has an excellent second week, up 67% in units and climbing 3 places from No9 to No6, ahead of Capcom’s ‘Resident Evil 4’ which re-enters the Top 40 at No7 thanks to the release of the PS2 version this week (the Gamecube version was released back in March). Another Top 10 re-entry is ‘The Sims 2’ from EA, making an appearance at No10 with PS2/XB/DS/GBA/GC versions all new additions to accompany the PC version. The only other new entry to make it into the Top 10 is Activision’s FPS ‘Call of Duty 2’ (PC) at No9, leaving competing PC strategy games ‘Civilization IV’ from Take 2 and Microsoft’s ‘Age of Empires III’ locked in close combat on the outskirts of the Top 10, debuting at No11 and 12 respectively. Only 2 other new releases make it into the Top 40: Sony’s karaoke game ‘Singstar ‘80s’ (PS2) at No22 (singing partner ‘Singstar Popworld’ refuses to leave the Top 40 stage, down from No10 to No31) and Vivendi’s ‘Crash Tag Team Racing’ (PS2/XB/GC) new at No28.
