Westlife take a sixth consecutive week at No1 on the Album Chart with ‘The Love Album’ and in the process they beat Snow Patrol’s ‘Eyes Open’ in the battle for the year’s best-selling album, overtaking them on the final stretch around lunchtime last Friday.
This is the first time Westlife have ever had the best-seller of the year: their previous highest ranking in the year-end listings was No3 which they achieved for three of their earlier albums: ‘Westlife’ (1999), ‘World Of Our Own’ (2001) and ‘Face To Face’ (2005). Leona extends her lead at the top of the final weekly Singles Chart of 2006 with ‘A Moment Like This’, notching up the highest 7-day sales tally of the year. This is still not enough, however, to challenge the best-selling singles of the year: Pat Shortt’s ‘Jumbo Breakfast Roll’ at No1 with a narrow lead of less than 500 sales over runner-up Shakira (feat. Wyclef Jean) ‘Hips Don’t Lie’. Pat Shortt caps a great year with ‘You Won’t Get Away With That Here’ topping the 2006 DVD Chart, ahead of the Johnny Cash bio-pic ‘Walk The Line’.
