Britney Hits Seven

11/Jan/2008

Nine years after her debut single ‘Baby One More Time’ stormed to the top of the Irish Singles Chart, Britney Spears lands her seventh No1 this week with ‘Piece Of Me’. Britney now ties with Madonna as the solo female artist with the most No1 singles in Ireland, but her hit-rate is more impressive: every one of her twenty singles has made the Top 10 except for 2001’s ‘Don’t Let Me Be The Last To Know’ which peaked at No12.

Sweden’s Basshunter have this week’s highest Top 40 new entry with their massive European hit ‘Now You’re Gone’ (Boten Anna) at No3 – the first release on Ministry Of Sound’s new Hard2Beat imprint. There are three other new entries in this week’s Top 40: Kanye West ‘Homecoming’ at No19, Lupe Fiasco ‘Superstar’ at No32 – Lupe’s second appearance on the Irish Chart after guesting on Kanye’s ‘Touch The Sky’ in 2006 – and finally Maroon 5 ‘Won’t Go Home Without You’ at No38. The top of the Album Chart remains tight this week, with just a handful of sales separating the Top 3: Michael Bublé ‘Call Me Irresponsible’ back at No1, Amy Winehouse ‘Back To Black’ at No2 and Radiohead ‘In Rainbows’ at No3. Britney Spears ‘Blackout’ debuted at No1 on release back in October last year, slipped down the chart for 6 weeks, and has since then climbed for 4 consecutive weeks – up to No6 from No11 this week to mount another challenge on the summit fuelled by her No1 single.
