Cars shifts into top gear

‘Cars’ overtakes ‘Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories’ to give THQ their first All Formats No1 of 2006. The film launched on Friday, helping to boost sales of the game by 88% in its third week of release and put the skids on Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories’ 5 weeks dominance at the top of the All Format Chart.

Cars Stall Behind GTA

Take 2’s ‘Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories’ on PS2/PSP stays on top for its 5th week at No1. THQ’s ‘Cars’ steps up a gear from No16 to No2 to be this week’s highest climber thanks to the build up of the film’s release on the 28th July. The hand held formats (PSP/DS/GBA) being the real force behind the impressive jump in position as children stock up for the holidays. Nintendo DS’s ‘New Super Mario Bros’ holds No3, while Ubisoft move up 6 places to No4 with ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow’ benefiting from both a very successful silver screen reaction and the release of the PC version.

GTA Stalked By Prey

Take 2’s ‘Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories’ on PS2/PSP takes a 4th week at No1 (-34%), driven in all of those weeks by the launch of the budget-priced PS2 version. 2K Games/Take 2 can celebrate the long-awaited arrival of ‘Prey’ at No2, originally a PC concept from 10 years ago – now out on PC and Xbox 360. ‘Prey’ was produced by 3D Realms (of Duke Nukem fame) and developed by Human Head on PC / Venom Games on 360 and claims No1 on both format charts, although the Xbox 360 version is by far the lead format, accounting for 77% of unit sales.

GTA holds up No1 - Mario new at 2

‘Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories’ remains streets ahead at the top of the All Formats Chart, despite ‘New Super Mario Bros’ bounding in at No2 with the second highest DS launch week ever, behind ‘Super Mario 64 DS’.
